Ahead of the start of the Bangladesh series on Sunday, Yashasvi Jaiswal caused concern in the Indian camp, necessitating the intervention of both Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir.
With a record 712 runs against England in India’s final home series, Yashasvi Jaiswal had an amazing start to his Test career. He even cracked the top 10 in the ICC Test rankings after the incredible performance. Since then, though, the young player has struggled with consistency; he was benched in the T20 World Cup and had a dismal IPL season despite scoring a century. Two days before the Test series against Bangladesh began, on Sunday, Jaiswal caused concern in the Indian camp, necessitating the intervention of both head coach Gautam Gambhir and former captain Virat Kohli.
As he waited for his turn to bat, Kohli reportedly stood next to the MA Chidambaram Stadium’s centre square, watching as Jasprit Bumrah hit Jaiswal’s stump for a walk. This incident was reported in the Indian Express. While getting bowled out by one of the best bowlers of this generation didn’t worry Kohli or those watching closely during the practise, the 35-year-old felt compelled to stop and speak with the young player after his struggles against Bumrah.
The struggle was against both Bumrah and Akash Deep, who had bothered the batter during their Duleep Trophy match a week before. Bumrah managed to get one to slip in between his bat and pad and rattle against the middle stump. Jaiswal also felt uneasy playing against Yudhvir Singh, the Jammu Kashmiri net bowler, and Mohammed Siraj.
After Bumrah dismissed Jaiswal, Kohli, who had the finest perspective of his batting, spoke briefly with him before taking over once more, but the struggle went on. After that, Jaiswal was taken to the nets by Gambhir, who intervened and gave him a 20-minute training session where he faced throwdowns and worked on getting behind the line.
Responsibility Awaits Jaiswal
India’s Test season will be lengthy. The Australian tour later in the year will be the team’s main priority. Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins have acknowledged that they are excited to play Jaiswal again after the latter raised the bar against England with his attacking style of playing. The article also stated that Jaiswal did not demonstrate any resistance to spinners, who will be India’s main threat in the series against Bangladesh. He was spotted tonking the tweakers for large shots on the leg-side on Monday.
