Known affectionately as “Gudda,” renowned designer Rohit Bal passed away at the age of 63.
As he recalled their initial encounter, Tarun Tahiliani expressed respect to Rohit Bal.
This year’s Lakme India Fashion Week in Delhi hosted Rohit Bal’s most recent performance.
In a heartfelt homage to Rohit Bal, renowned fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani recalled their first encounter and shared priceless memories with him.
After a protracted illness, famed fashion designer Rohit Bal passed away on Friday. He was sixty-three.
What Tahiliani says about Rohit Bal?
“I first remember meeting Rohit Bal on the St Stephen’s specials that picked him up from Jor Bagh and then picked me up from Prithviraj road,” Tahiliani remarked in an interview with India Today regarding his initial encounter with the actor. The drive to and from St. Stephen’s was long and hot back then. We talked a lot, but I chose to continue my studies overseas and left shortly after the first year.
Tahiliani commented on Rohit Bal’s body of work, saying, “We decided to bring a multi-brand ensemble to New Delhi in 1998, which pleasantly pleased me. We connected and began doing some of Rohit Bal’s work, who had previously worked in exports and began designing men’s clothing.
He may have created for every man in that show, in my opinion. Additionally, Tahiliani recalls, “that was really exciting because he worked with textiles, fabrics, and those lovely shawls that he bought from Ludhiana at that time.”
In his praise of Rohit Bal’s innovative designs, Tarun Tahiliani recalled how he added “wonderful magic” to women’s clothing.
Rohit Bal’s Tailoring and Structures
“We Indians were rediscovering our Indianness via more tailoring and structure rather than merely textiles at that time, following liberalisation and some degree of opening up in India. He then proceeded to apply this amazing magic to women’s clothing, which always appeared to be influenced by the most exquisite lengthy silhouettes that he was able to expertly make for both men and women. Additionally, the sherwani to the anarkali, as well as its various variations, sleekness, and perfection, were all unavailable to many Indian designers at the time due to their lack of family support for the superb tailoring and his amazing imagination.”
Together with Rohit Bal, Tahiliani participated in a number of fashion events. She stated: “By the early 1990s, we performed in a lot of shows. At one of the major trade shows that used to take place in Germany, we also represented India. Additionally, it appears that we were all learning how to enchant both the Indian subcontinent and the world at large, where the dominant perception of India was entirely different from what this new generation of designers was boldly displaying.”

Tahiliani also recounted happy times spent with Rohit Bal, affectionately known as “Gudda,” in an interview with India Today. As a family member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) in both Delhi and Mumbai, I also spent a lot of time with Gudda. A gathering that Gudda hosted at a farmhouse is among my most enduring memories of him. Given that the farm was undeveloped, you had to drive to a specific location where the three-wheelers were totally decorated with balloons, creating a crazy display. We got into them and came at the celebration. It really seemed like attending Peter Sellers’ party at that particular moment, but with a lot more colour and Indian flair.”
Speaking of ‘Gudda”s humorous side, Tahiliani mentioned that among the “gifts that he will always leave with me when I think of him” are his inventiveness and laughter.
“When Gudda worked, he worked like no other, and when he partied, he partied like no other,” Tahiliani stated.
Since last year, Rohit Bal has been dealing with a heart condition. In November 2023, he was brought to the Medanta Hospital’s intensive care unit in Gurugram.
He returned to work earlier this year, and last month in Delhi, he presented his final show at Lakme India Fashion Week.
