Andhra Pradesh native Usha Chilukuri Vance, whose family emigrated to the US fifty years ago, is poised to become the country’s first non-white second lady.
The wife of Donald Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, Usha Chilukuri Vance, is expected to become the country’s first Indian-origin second lady. Her origins are in Andhra Pradesh, India. Usha’s ancestral village, which was born and nurtured in a San Diego suburb, has been praying for improvements to their land in the hopes that her historic position will result in progress.

All About Usha Vance’s Indian Roots
Origins: Vadluru, a village in Andhra Pradesh, India, is where Usha Vance is originally from. Since moving overseas more than 50 years ago, her family has supported the village by giving land for temples including the Goddess Bala Seeta, Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, and Sai Baba temples, which were constructed for the benefit of the community.
Praying for Vance’s victory: Vadluru villagers have prayed for JD Vance to win the election, believing that his triumph will boost village pride and improve ties between India and the US.
Family connections: Usha’s father, Chilukuri Radhakrishnan, visited the village about three years ago to assess the temples’ state, but Usha has never been there.

In 1986, Usha Vance’s parents left India for the United States. She grew up in an upper-middle-class suburb after being born in San Diego. Usha’s father was raised in Chennai before going to school in the United States, while her great-grandfather departed Vadluru. The rising Indian-American community is exemplified by Usha Vance’s tale. According to the U.S. census, Indians are the second-largest Asian ethnic group in the nation, having increased by 50% to 4.8 million persons between 2010 and 2020.
