Thanksgiving Day 2024 in USA – Wishes, History

Thanksgiving day

In the US and Canada, Thanksgiving Day is a yearly national holiday honouring the harvest and other benefits of the previous year. Most Americans think that Thanksgiving is based on a harvest feast that the Wampanoag people and the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth had in 1621. The Thanksgiving feast traditionally consists of turkey, bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. The American holiday is especially rich in folklore and symbolism. Due to family members getting together, the holiday is frequently the busiest time of year for car travel.

As they “in one day killed as much as…served the company almost a week,” a few colonists went out “fowling” to start Plymouth’s Thanksgiving, perhaps for turkeys but more likely for the easier prey of geese and ducks. The 50 or so colonists were undoubtedly unnerved when 90 Wampanoag suddenly appeared at the gate to the village. However, the two groups interacted amicably throughout the course of the following few days.

Along with the poultry, the Wampanoag also provided venison, stews, vegetables, beer, and likely fish, eels, and shellfish. The majority of people in Plymouth ate outside, sitting on the ground or on barrels with plates on their laps, because the city had few structures and manufactured products. The men drank liquor, ran races and fired weapons while attempting to communicate in Wampanoag and bad English. Despite being a very chaotic event, it resulted in a peace between the two parties that persisted until King Philip’s War (1675–76), during which thousands of Native Americans and hundreds of colonists perished.

Regular “Thanksgivings,” days of prayer and gratitude to God for favours like a military triumph or the end of a drought, were customary for the colonists of New England. For instance, when the Constitution was passed, the U.S. Continental Congress declared a national Thanksgiving. However, the new U.S. Congress left Thanksgiving declarations to the states after 1798; some were offended by the use of the day for partisan speeches and parades, others were slow to embrace a New England custom, and still others objected to the federal government’s involvement in a religious observance. Instead of serving as a unifying factor, a national Thanksgiving Day appeared to be more of a spark for controversy.

It wasn’t until Northerners controlled the federal government that Thanksgiving Day was declared a holiday. In order to foster togetherness during the mid-19th century, Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of the well-known journal Godey’s Lady’s Book, pushed for a national Thanksgiving Day. President Abraham Lincoln eventually backed her. Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving to be observed on Thursday, November 26, during the Civil War on October 3, 1863.

Every president after then declared the holiday every year, and the final Thursday in November was almost always the date. But by pushing the date back a week to the third week of November, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sought to improve the economy and prolong the Christmas shopping season, which usually starts with the Thanksgiving holiday. However, not all states followed suit, and Roosevelt declared the fourth Thursday in November—which isn’t necessarily the final Thursday—to be Thanksgiving Day in 1942 following a joint vote of Congress in 1941.

Thanksgiving evolved into a time to be together as the nation grew increasingly urbanised and family members started to live farther apart. In order to enable immigrants from various backgrounds to partake in a shared custom, the holiday strayed from its religious origins. Football games on Thanksgiving Day allowed spectators to inject some raucousness into the occasion, starting with Yale vs. Princeton in 1876.

Parades of costumed revellers became popular in the late 1800s. In 1920, Santa Claus led a procession of roughly fifty people in front of Gimbel’s department store in Philadelphia. The custom has been carried on since 1924 by New York City’s annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which has featured enormous balloons since 1927. The Pilgrim and Native American celebration has evolved into a symbol of goodwill between cultures, the opportunity for immigrants in America, and the value of family and home.

Thanksgiving celebrations in Canada also date back to the colonial era and were inspired by the same European customs of expressing thanks for peaceful travel, abundant harvests, and safe travel. In order to express gratitude for the safety of its fleet, an expedition under the command of Martin Frobisher performed a ceremony in modern-day Nunavut in 1578, marking the first celebration. November 6 was designated as a national Thanksgiving Day by Parliament in 1879; the date has changed since then. In Canada, Thanksgiving Day has been observed on the second Monday in October since 1957.
