In the midst of doubt following his record IPL agreement, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s father has gone on to say that he would be willing to have his son undergo the appropriate tests to establish his age.
On the second day of the Indian Premier League’s 2025 Mega Auction, Vaibhav Suryavanshi made news by becoming the youngest player to be purchased by a team.
Many media sources said that Suryavanshi was just 13 years old, however an internet interview from 2023 suggests that he may actually be 15 years old, raising questions about his true age.
He was 14 years old when the sale took place, according to data from the Indian Premier League on their official website. However, the player stated in an earlier interview posted by BNN News Benipatti in April 2023 that he would turn 14 in September of that year. He would have turned 15 by now, according to this.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Age Controversy
The fact that the player data gathered for the 2025 Mega Auction was done prior to his 15th birthday could be one reason for the discrepancy. Suryavanshi stated in the interview that September was his birthday month.
He still holds the record, though, for being the youngest player to be purchased at auction. Prayas Ray Barman was the former holder of that record, having joined the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2019 auction at the age of 16. The cricketer from Bengal did not play in the IPL after that season, therefore his career did not last long.
In a PTI interview, his father stated that he would be more than happy to take the required tests to confirm his age and, if needed, clear up any confusion.
He initially showed up for a BCCI bone test when he was eight and a half years old. He’s played for India U-19 before. We have no fear of anyone. He can take the age test once more,” he stated.
He would be working under Rahul Dravid, the T20 World Cup-winning coach of the Rajasthan Royals, who has a lot of experience working with young players and has climbed the ranks.
The Indian all-rounder Riyan Parag, who made his IPL debut in 2019 at the age of just 17, is another important member of the team who might help him. Despite a difficult start to his IPL career, Parag persevered and established himself as a top potential for the future.
