Over 12,000 buildings have been demolished as firemen start to establish containment. Even as firefighters started to partially control the numerous fires that have so far destroyed over 12,000 structures and claimed 13 lives in the Los Angeles area, residents of Brentwood, on the eastern flank of the Palisades fire, and Encino, to the north, were ordered to evacuate overnight.
Nearly 180,000 people were ordered to evacuate as of Saturday morning due to the fires that have caused unheard-of levels of damage in the greater Los Angeles area. East of the 405 Freeway, which runs north-south and has so far served as a vital route between the interior areas of West L.A. and the Palisades fire, which has burned almost 22,000 acres, evacuation alerts have been issued.
The most recent obligatory order extends from Sunset Boulevard north to Encino Reservoir and from the 405 west to Mandeville Canyon, an area that has been gradually pushing to the east. The Getty Center museum, which is located in the neighborhood, claims to have cooperated and only left emergency staff behind.
Overnight, communities north of West Sunset, south of Mulholland Drive, and east of the 405 were also under evacuation warnings. Over the weekend, conditions were predicted to ease somewhat with fewer winds and breezes; but, in places that are prone to Santa Ana, wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph were predicted to persist and reappear later this week.
As of Saturday morning, the Palisades Fire, which has destroyed almost the whole community, was 11% contained. According to fire officials, the Eaton Fire, which has destroyed 14,000 acres close to Altadena and portions of Pasadena, was 15% contained.
More than 12,000 buildings were damaged or completely destroyed, and 13 confirmed deaths were reported, up from 11 on Friday.
