In June of this year, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner spaceship. On September 7, this spacecraft will return to Earth without any crew members. Next year, the two astronauts will make a repeat trip in SapceX’s Crew Dragon. NASA made this decision because the Boeing spacecraft’s thrusters were malfunctioning and there had been many reports of helium leaks, endangering the astronauts.
The spacecraft is scheduled to undock from the International Space Station on September 6 around 6:04 p.m. EDT, or 5.30 AM IST, on September 7, according to NASA. NASA announced, “On Saturday, September 7, at 12:03 am, the spacecraft will touch down, descending under parachute protection and with inflated airbags to cushion the impact.” The spacecraft will be saved and prepared for return to Boeing’s Starliner plant at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida by recovery teams in the landing zone.”
The unmanned Starliner spacecraft will execute a fully autonomous return with flight controllers at Boeing Mission Control Centre in Florida and Starliner Mission Control in Houston, according to the official announcement. The spacecraft may be remotely manoeuvred for a safe undocking, re-entry, and parachute-assisted landing in the southwest of the United States by teams on the ground, if necessary.
Notably, on June 5, NASA astronauts launched the Boeing Starliner spacecraft to evaluate its suitability for use in commercial space missions. The estimated duration of this mission was eight days. However, a malfunctioning propulsion system caused a delay in the space capsule’s return. Since then, they have been stranded at the International Space Station.
Spaceflight is risky, as NASA administrator Bill Nelson just said. even in the safest possible state. even in its most quotidian form. By its very nature, a test flight is neither routine nor safe. Therefore, a dedication to safety led to the decision to keep Butch and Suni on the International Space Station and return the Boeing Starliner without a crew.”

Bonnie Pandya, Sunita Williams’ mother, is happy that NASA is putting her safety first and isn’t pressuring her to return sooner rather than later.
Butch Wilmore and NASA astronaut Sunita Williams will have to remain in space until February 2025. Williams’ mother and spouse are among her family members who have spoken out about the circumstance. Williams’ mother Bonnie Pandya told News Nation Now that during her latest contact from space, her daughter assured her to “not worry” and “everything will be okay.”

She responded, “I’ve been an astronaut mom for 20 years, and this is her third flight,” when asked if she was genuinely concerned about returning to space and staying there for a long period. We don’t think there’s a major issue, even if it was, you know, having problems. All they want to know is that they will return safely. For this reason, they made the decision to keep them up there.
Book on Sunita Williams
Notably, Pandya wrote a book about her daughter travelling to space in 2022 titled “Little Tail, Big Tales: The Adventures of an Astronaut’s Dog, Gorby and His Two and Four Legged Friends.”
She expressed her relief that NASA is not pressuring her to return in a TMZ interview. “To be honest, I’m glad they didn’t rush her return,” she remarked. There have already been two shuttle mishaps, and neither my daughter nor anybody else should experience that. That being said, I think it’s better to be cautious than sorry.
Since she is her best friend, Pandya continued, “I miss her—we had plans to do things together. She is my best friend.” However, I get it.
Daniele Williams, Williams’ spouse, recently stated to the Wall Street Journal that she is in her “happy place.”
In February 2025, Williams and Wilmore will return to Earth in SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft. The Boeing Starliner is unsuited for astronauts due to many malfunctioning thrusters and helium leaks. Starliner will therefore return to Earth without crew.

The journey taken by Jonny Kim to reach the International Space Station is incredible.
