Sector 36 Movie Review
Vikrant Massey with his self-abasing smile and eerie banter concealing his true nature, attempts to make his Prem credible, a complete 360-degree turn from the earnest student of 12th Fail. This is not a man you would want waiting for you on a dark street.
The gruesome details of the 2005–2006 serial killings in Nithari, an ugly neighbourhood in Noida, chilled your blood. After a human hand was inadvertently found in a drain, more body parts were found in a water tank and buried in the compound of Maninder Pandher, a businessman. Surinder Koli, the businessman’s house helper, confessed to raping and killing almost 20 children by sexually abusing them and then dismembering them in his bathroom.
Both men were imprisoned and given death sentences, but in 2023, their sentences were revoked “due to lack of evidence.” Those who had followed the case were persuaded that justice had been denied; the distraught parents of the children felt completely let down by the government and the legal system, which marginalises the poor and favours the wealthy.
Although “Sector 36” is obviously based on the Nithari massacres, it backs off from claiming “authenticity and accuracy” right away in its introductory disclaimer. Names are modified. Pandher becomes Bassi, Nithari becomes Seelampur/Shahdara, and Surinder becomes Prem. With the apparent assistance of his peers, the police officer who was under fire for dismissing the grievances of the parents of the missing children is now seen to have changed his mind and is beginning to take the situation seriously.
Vikrant Massey and Moninder Singh Pandher
The movie Sector 36, is set up as a police-and-thief game between Inspector Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak Dobriyal) and the psychotic Prem (Vikrant Massey), and in the first part, it is successful in making us feel repulsed and afraid as we witness the creation of a monster. With his simple behaviour concealing his true nature, Massey attempts to make his Prem credible, a complete 360-degree turn from the earnest student of 12th Fail. This is not a man you would want waiting for you on a dark street.
But just as he is about to launch into a lengthy tirade that functions as a confession, the tension begins to fade as he speaks incoherently. In the role of Pandey’s boss, Darshan Jariwala, who has past connections to Bassi, plays a stereotypical Bollywood cop attempting to keep his skin intact. If his role as the shady Bassi, played by Akash Khurana, hadn’t been handled so carefully—despite being obviously a paedophile, he gets away with too much—he may have been more. You’re kept watching by Deepak Dobriyal, who does a perfect job of drawing a bead on the culprit after making him lift his blinkers.
