Physicist Rohini Godbole, a trailblazing particle scientist and Padma Shri laureate, died in Pune on Friday.
“We deeply mourn the passing of Prof. Rohini Godbole with great sadness,” the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, wrote in a sympathy note. She died quietly in her sleep early this morning. Godbole was not only a superb scientist but also an excellent friend, coworker, leader, and mentor. She advocated for female scientists.
In 1995, Professor Godbole began working at the IISc, and in 2018, he retired. She received numerous honours and distinctions, such as the Padma Shri and the French Ordre national du Mérite, and she was a member of several academies. Additionally, Professor Godbole participated on a number of advisory groups for both Indian and foreign governments.
In 1952, Prof. Godbole was born in Pune. She completed her MSc at IIT Bombay after graduating from the University of Pune, where she was awarded the silver medal. In 1979, she earned her doctorate from Stony Brook, New York’s State University.
She was a scientific associate at CERN’s theory department and a visiting professor at other universities and institutes across the world.
A Guiding Light for Many
Physicist Rohini Godbole joined the IISc in November 1995 after teaching at the University of Bombay. She continues to conduct research at the Centre for High Energy Physics (CHEP) after retiring as a full professor from the institute in July 2018, according to the IISc report. Godbole has mentored more than 14 PhD students, three MPhil students, and five Master’s students during her tenure.”
The institute also said in the note that her most recent student turned in the thesis in August. The majority of her pupils have achieved success and are now employed as faculty at prestigious universities both domestically and outside.
In India, Prof. Godbole was a pioneer in particle physics. Although she has dabbled in a number of subfields, her primary area of study has remained collider physics, specifically top and Higgs physics. According to the institute, she was an advocate for future colliders, specifically the International Linear Collider (ILC) and its variations.
