Govardhan Puja 2024 – Govardhan Puja, often referred to as Godhan Puja or Annakut Puja, is a major Hindu holiday. Diwali’s fourth day is dedicated to Govardhan Puja. Legend has it that Govardhan Puja honours Lord Krishna’s victory against Lord Indra, who raised the Govardhan mountain to protect the Gokul people from a deluge of rain.
Why is Govardhan Puja Celebrated?
Hindu legend states that the Gokul people worshipped Lord Indra. But Lord Krishna instructed them to worship the Govardhan mountain, which gave them sustenance and safety. He became enraged when the Gokul people began to worship the mountain rather than Lord Indra and adhered to Lord Krishna. To punish the people, he brought rain and thunder. But by raising Govardhan Mountain on his little finger and providing cover for everyone, Lord Krishna safeguarded the entire hamlet. After a few days, Lord Indra halted the showers and conceded defeat. Since then, the fortunate day of Govardhan Puja has been used to honour Lord Krishna and Govardhan Mountain.
