Why is Dev Deepawali Celebrated?
Dev Diwali commemorates Lord Shiva’s triumph over the demon Tripurasur. It is a day of divine victory and spiritual significance. Hindu mythology holds that all of the gods and goddesses came to Earth on this auspicious day and gathered in Varanasi to celebrate Lord Shiva’s triumph. One of the most venerated events in the Hindu calendar, the festival occurs when the holy force is believed to be at its strongest.
As residents adorn their homes, streets, and temples with lights, the city of Varanasi is lighted by millions of diyas, or oil lamps. As a result, the Ganga Ghats become the focal point of festivities, making for an amazing sight. An ethereal and spiritually charged atmosphere is created by the hundreds of devotees who go to the ghats, worship, and offer deep daan (light offerings) into the river during the festival, which is particularly prominent in Varanasi.
